The first Brazilian edition of Hack4Freedom, an international Bitcoin hackathon exclusively for women, concluded on Saturday, July 25, after two weeks of technical training and project development in São Paulo.
The initiative brought together 26 participants from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Minas Gerais, who created nine solutions using technologies such as Bitcoin Core, Lightning Network, Nostr, and Breez SDK.
Held at Casa21, the headquarters of Vinteum, a non-profit organization dedicated to training and funding Bitcoin developers in Latin America, the program distributed over $5,000 in prizes.
The Brazilian edition is part of a global series of hackathons organized by Evento and was conducted after the first experience in Nigeria.
Hack4Freedom is exclusive to women due to the low female participation in technical and development areas of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
During the two weeks, participants had access to workshops, mentorship, and support to transform observed problems in their local realities into functional prototypes.
"Hack4Freedom reinforced something I have always believed: when we provide a welcoming environment, quality mentorship, and real challenges, women respond by building high-level technology. It was exciting to see participants who arrived not knowing each other finish the event presenting solid projects, learning quickly, and seeing new career possibilities. I hope this is just the beginning of an increasingly strong community of women building the future of Bitcoin and freedom technologies in Brazil," says Brianna Honkawa, founder of Evento and creator of Hack4Freedom.

For Ingrid Gama, participating in the event exceeded her and her team's expectations.
It was very different from other projects I participated in. This one was much more intense: we had several educational tracks and access to people from various countries. The bilingual experience was also excellent for developing skills that go beyond programming. The two weeks inside Casa21 gave us access to mentors almost 24 hours a day, and that made all the difference. It was a place where I made friends, helped, and was helped. The results we achieved show that it worked out very well.
For many participants, Hack4Freedom São Paulo was their first experience in a hackathon.
This was the case for Lunna Ribeiro, a student at the software engineering school 42 Rio, who won third place with her team.
It was great. It was a place of transformation and showed me something that, once you see it, you can no longer unsee. If you, like me, think you don't fit into this environment, I believe the best thing to do is to show up and draw your own conclusions. I thought Bitcoin was an exclusive space for men, Ribeiro states.
In addition to the awards, projects are encouraged to continue being developed after the hackathon.
The proposal is for teams to use part of the prize to advance the construction of prototypes, seek grants, and transform solutions into tools effectively used by the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Throughout the two weeks, the program included over 20 activities such as workshops, lectures, and mentoring on Bitcoin development and its applications, privacy and financial freedom, AI products, soft and hard skills, as well as the skills necessary to create a good open-source project.
Among the international mentors were Queen Marcel from Bitcoin Dada and Dada Devs; Sabina Gitau, co-founder of Tando; Isabella Rugna from Bitrefill; Mogashni Naidoo, Grantee from Spiral; Kanika Singh; D++, Bitcoin Engineer; Claire Parkinson, COS of ZBD; Amit Uttarwar, Dulce; Anaise Kanimba from the African Bitcoin Institute; Emilia Roitman from Despegar; and Lucca Godoy, along with Brazilians Renata Rodrigues from FEDI; Thiago Orikassa from BIPA; and Lucas from Vinteum.
The proposal of the intensive program is to provide the training and tools necessary to cater to participants from beginners to advanced levels, as well as to connect professional opportunities, grants, and international development communities.
The hackathon was supported by Soapbox, Breez, Vinteum, and BTrust. With the conclusion of the Brazilian edition, the organizers hope to keep participants connected to the community and hold the next edition.
Hack4Freedom creates an environment where women can learn, test ideas, and recognize themselves as part of the construction of Bitcoin. The more experiences and realities present in this development, the greater the technology's capacity to address problems that truly need to be solved, says Thaiz Batista, Head of Operations at Vinteum.
Hack4Freedom is an international series of hackathons aimed at training women developers in the ecosystem of open and decentralized technologies.
