The Theory of the 'Dead Internet' is Confirmed: AI Agent Traffic Soars by 8000%
You are never better served than by yourself. AI agents no longer just answer questions. They click, fill out forms, compare prices, and make purchases on behalf of humans, often without anyone noticing on the other side of the screen. A theory long mocked as a conspiracy theory, that of the "dead internet" (the idea that the majority of online content and traffic is generated by bots rather than real people), seems to finally find a real numerical confirmation.
This is no longer just a matter of volume. It is a change in nature: the web is shifting from a space for human consultation to an infrastructure for transactions between machines. A click no longer has the same economic significance depending on whether it comes from a human or an agent comparing 200 sites in 3 seconds.
Key points of this article:
- Traffic generated by AI agents on the web has seen a spectacular increase of 7851% in one year, according to HUMAN Security.
- Cloudflare revealed that bots have surpassed humans, generating 57.5% of web page requests since last June.
According to a report from cybersecurity company HUMAN Security, the traffic generated by agents that actually act on the web (clicking links, filling out forms, placing orders) has surged by 7851% over the past year.
A staggering figure, even for a sector accustomed to exponential curves. As reported by Fortune, Cloudflare, for its part, places the tipping point in last June: bots now generate 57.5% of web page requests, more than humans.
The figures vary depending on who measures, and that is the crux of the problem. The French company Thales, in its "Bad Bot Report", estimates bot traffic at 53% in 2026, while pushing the tipping point back to 2023. No provider has visibility over the entirety of the web, each measuring according to their own methodology and sample of monitored sites. Cloudflare had predicted this shift for the end of 2027. It arrived 18 months earlier.
The underlying trend is hardly debatable. The so-called "scraper" traffic (robots that scrape content to feed databases or train models) has increased by 597% over the same period, even though its relative share in overall AI traffic is slightly declining as "active" agents take over from simple data collectors. A symbol of this shift: developer Matt Schlicht launched earlier this year Moltbook, a social network designed exclusively for AI agents, which gathered over 1.5 million active accounts in just a few days.
For advertising, analytics, and fraud, the historical model is collapsing. An AI agent that compares prices or places an order for a user behaves similarly to a malicious bot. Detection systems, calibrated for humans, are gradually becoming blind or too aggressive. The result: the value of a click and a session must be entirely recalibrated.
Indeed, an advertising click no longer holds the same value if it comes from an agent programmed to compare prices rather than a curious consumer. And fraud detection systems, calibrated for human behaviors, must now learn to distinguish a malicious bot from a perfectly legitimate AI assistant shopping on behalf of its user. The tokenization of a verifiable identity for each agent, a project already championed by figures like Vint Cerf, has never seemed as urgent as it does today.
