The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has announced that it is developing an on-chain payment platform for tokenized securities.
Lynn Martin, President of NYSE, made this statement on the 10th at a seminar titled "Advancing the Capital Market of Korea and Enhancing Global Competitiveness" held at the National Assembly Hall in Yeouido-dong, Seoul.
Martin cited tokenization and on-chain payments as examples of building market infrastructure for trust. He stated, "We participated in the pilot project of DTC (Depository Trust Company) in July, and we will explore how this technology can be responsibly implemented as a key infrastructure for the future of global financial markets." He added, "We are at a significant turning point in integrating new technologies into traditional financial markets, bridging traditional finance and DeFi (Decentralized Finance)."
"Honorable Kim Nam-jun, member of the Democratic Party, and esteemed leaders and members of the National Assembly present here today, I thank you for inviting me to this important occasion. My name is Lynn Martin, and I am the President of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)."
"It is a great honor to speak at this event, where I bear such a significant responsibility regarding the future of the Korean economy and Korea's position in the global financial market."
"In September, I had the pleasure of hosting President Lee Jae-myung and the Korean delegation at the New York Stock Exchange. This was a moment to honor Korea's ongoing role on the world stage and the depth of friendship between our two countries. Now, standing here in Seoul, where the future of the Korean economy is being shaped, I feel a meaningful continuation of that conversation."
"I stand here today not as a bystander in the Korean capital market but as a true partner in its development."
"The New York Stock Exchange has been the world's premier venue for long-term capital formation. Its status over the past 230 years has not been taken for granted. It has been earned through meaningful choices regarding governance, investor protection, and institutional trust. What I want to share with you today is precisely this: market stability and investor confidence."
"In recent years, global capital markets have faced significant tests. Together, we have navigated the pandemic, unprecedented interest rate cycles, geopolitical shocks, and the rise of technologies fundamentally changing how markets operate. What distinguishes markets that have maintained investor confidence throughout this process is ultimately the quality of the institutional frameworks and safeguards that support them."
"Despite considerable volatility and high trading volumes amid geopolitical uncertainty, the technology of the New York Stock Exchange has performed without exception. On March 20 of this year, a record 3.6 billion shares were traded in the NYSE closing auction, with a nominal trading value also reaching an all-time high of $231 billion. Such resilience is the result of sustained and intentional investment in technology designed to operate effectively under pressure. Our system, which we call 'Pillar,' continues to operate stably even during particularly volatile and active periods."
"The capacity of a market to handle surging trading volumes in volatile conditions is crucial. However, technology alone is not enough. That is why every listed company on the New York Stock Exchange is paired with what we call a 'Designated Market Maker,' combining the advantages of technology with human judgment to provide superior opening and closing auctions and better bid-ask spreads throughout the day."
"As a result, companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange outperform the market with 40% lower volatility and 60% narrower spreads across all sectors. I believe that everything the exchange does ultimately comes down to protecting investors and issuing companies. As the world's largest exchange, we exist to ensure effective price discovery and robust risk management at the most critical moments by operating the most transparent, liquid, and efficient markets, thereby maintaining investor confidence."
"Such confidence is not established once and for all. It is the result of consistent and responsible innovation that maintains a fair, orderly, and resilient market for investors. We continue to apply this expertise to reimagine and advance market infrastructure, and as part of this, we are developing a platform for on-chain payments for tokenized securities. We participated in the DTC's tokenization pilot project in July, and we will continue to explore how this technology can be responsibly implemented as a key infrastructure for the future of global financial markets."
"In the second half of this year, we will lead the industry by introducing extended trading hours. The New York Stock Exchange is the first U.S. exchange operator to receive approval from our regulatory body, the SEC, to extend trading hours while utilizing existing market safeguards and protections. We are prepared to transition to a five-day, 23-hour trading system starting in December, providing nearly 24-hour accessibility."
"It is particularly noteworthy that on July 6, Korea's won-dollar foreign exchange market transitioned to a 24-hour trading system. While the markets in Korea and the U.S. are different, the preparation processes for this have been similar. Both countries have modernized their systems to support these extended trading hours."
"Technology is not just changing how we trade. It is changing how we understand markets, how risks are reflected in prices, how liquidity is sourced, and how capital reaches the companies and projects that need it most."
"This is a fundamental change, progressing faster than any individual regulatory body, exchange, or legislative body can fully anticipate. The goal of the New York Stock Exchange and our parent company is to become a key infrastructure provider for future financial markets, establishing responsible innovation that is safe, stable, scalable, and compliant with regulations. This is not innovation for the sake of innovation, but innovation that serves a fundamental purpose."
"Markets have always played a role in connecting capital and opportunity."
"Finally, I want to leave you with one thought. It is crucial to respect our legacy while not being bound by it. Our 234-year history shows that reinvention is essential, and the moments of greatest change in the market present the best opportunities to redefine ourselves."
"Today, we stand at a significant turning point in integrating new DeFi technologies into traditional markets, bridging traditional finance and decentralized finance. The systems we have established set those boundaries. What has enabled new attempts in our market is that we have first built a solid foundation of infrastructure, rules, and integrity before technological innovation followed."
"The New York Stock Exchange has no greater concern than the health of the global market. When the market is transparent, stable, and trusted, capital flows to the most productive places, companies grow, innovation flourishes, the economy expands, and long-term investments that fund innovation, infrastructure, and opportunity can be made on a large scale."
"Korea is an economy built on the rare assets of scale, sophistication, and ambition that can compete at the pinnacle of the global capital market. What happens in this National Assembly will determine how quickly that potential is fully realized."
"The New York Stock Exchange approaches this question with 234 years of experience, eager to share that experience as a partner who believes that stronger capital markets make all markets better, no matter where they are."
"Thank you for the special opportunity to speak here today. The relationship between our two markets is one that I am deeply committed to, and as I leave Seoul, I do so with a sense of optimism about what we can build together like never before."
"Thank you.","summary":"The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has announced that it is developing an on-chain payment platform for tokenized securities.
