NVIDIA's Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) based Ethernet switch has entered full-scale production. This product places optical components close to the switch ASIC, reducing the number of lasers by a quarter compared to traditional transceiver-based networks, increasing power efficiency by five times, and improving the Mean Time Between Interruptions (MTBI) by ten times. Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics supports network infrastructure for large-scale AI factories and is expected to enhance the efficiency of AI model training and inference. The supply chain has been established through co-design with the Taiwanese semiconductor and system ecosystem, with TSMC handling silicon photonics manufacturing and SPIL responsible for chip scale packaging and assembly. The role of optical component supply chains, such as Lumentum, is also growing, and CPO is gaining attention as a technology that can replace traditional optical transceivers. While improvements in power efficiency for AI data center networks could influence design standards for high-performance computing infrastructure, the impact on mining costs or token prices requires further verification.
