On August 10, Hertz Global (HTZ) became the focus of retail investors on Reddit, benefiting from better-than-expected second-quarter earnings, leading to a significant rise in HTZ stock after the earnings report was released. Data shows that HTZ surged about 30% on Thursday and continued to climb during Friday's trading session, with trading volume significantly increasing, attracting discussions in communities like WallStreetBets. According to MarketBeat, as of July 15, there were approximately 97.54 million short shares of HTZ, accounting for about 31.2% of the float, with a days-to-cover of about 3.9 days. The high short ratio combined with the sudden surge has prompted short covering. Hertz's latest earnings report indicates that second-quarter revenue was approximately $2.396 billion, a year-over-year increase of about 10%; net profit was around $64 million, compared to a loss of $294 million in the same period last year. The loss per share was $0.11, better than the market expectation of a loss of $0.24. Against the backdrop of a warming risk appetite in the U.S. stock market, HTZ, as a low-priced, high-short stock, has become a target for short-term trading. Compared to GME in 2021, HTZ's current short ratio is about 30%, not yet reaching extreme levels.
