Solana (SOL) is preparing a consensus upgrade called Alpenglow, which aims to reduce the final transaction confirmation time from the current approximately 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. This upgrade involves changing the validator voting mechanism and the block finality structure. The Solana Foundation has set the target final confirmation time for Alpenglow at 150 milliseconds, reporting the current pre-confirmation delay time to be around 400 milliseconds. The core of Alpenglow is Votor, which allows validators to reduce on-chain voting transactions and handle block finalization through direct voting and aggregate proofs. Votor employs a '20+20' structure that withstands 20% malicious stake and 20% offline stake. Alpenglow is a consensus protocol that replaces the existing Proof-of-History and TowerBFT, aiming to reduce finality delays to 100-150 milliseconds and improve bandwidth efficiency. The Solana Foundation stated that the Alpenglow execution code will be included in Agave 4.2, but the mainnet activation will occur in 4.3. The target date for Agave 4.3 is October 2026. This upgrade is expected to have a direct impact on the stability of Solana's infrastructure and operational structure.
