Russia Expands Cryptocurrency Mining Ban to Moscow, Lasting Until 2032

Russia has expanded its cryptocurrency mining ban to include parts of Moscow, Moscow Oblast, and Kursk Oblast. The ban will take effect on August 15, 2026, and will last until December 31, 2032. The new restrictions are primarily due to pressure on electricity supply. Previously, similar measures were implemented in the Republic of Buryatia and the Transbaikal Territory. The Moscow Oblast energy department stated that limiting high-energy-consuming cryptocurrency mining activities will help alleviate pressure on electricity supply. Currently, there are 65 data centers connected to the power grid in Moscow and Moscow Oblast, with a total capacity of approximately 734 MW.
