OpenAI Launches Doughnut-Shaped Smart Speaker Priced at 300 to 400 Dollars
Prefer us on GoogleOpenAI's first consumer device is a doughnut-shaped smart speaker, approximately the size of a hockey puck, designed for home use. The battery-powered speaker features grilles, microphones, lights for listening signals, and sensors to interact with its environment. Its circular casing includes moving parts to enhance responsiveness compared to traditional smart speakers. OpenAI aims to position the device as an AI-centric computer, functioning similarly to ChatGPT's voice mode. Pricing discussions suggest a range of 300 to 400 dollars per unit. The hardware was developed in collaboration with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, utilizing premium materials. OpenAI acquired Ive's startup io for 6.4 billion dollars in May 2025 and is also co-developing a smartphone chip with Qualcomm and MediaTek. This announcement follows a lawsuit from Apple's former employer against OpenAI for alleged hardware trade secret misappropriation. OpenAI has denied the claims, describing the lawsuit as aggressive and personal, and has filed a motion to dismiss. Apple is seeking a preliminary injunction that could impact OpenAI's launch plans. OpenAI intends to unveil the speaker this year and begin shipping in 2027.
