OpenAI Bans ChatGPT Accounts Linked to Cambodian Scam Network

Prefer us on GoogleOpenAI announced on July 31 that it has banned a number of ChatGPT accounts associated with a Cambodian scam network. This network exploited ChatGPT to create fake identities, translate scam messages, and produce promotional content to gain the trust of victims through dating and friendship approaches, luring them into participating in fraudulent cryptocurrency or gold investment schemes. The initial leads were provided by WhatsApp, and the individuals involved may be operating in the Poipet area of Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. OpenAI has shared relevant information with industry partners, and the specific losses caused by this network are currently unclear, although some victims reportedly lost thousands of dollars.
