Microsoft Introduces OneDrive Photos App for Windows 11 Users

Windows 11 users are encountering a new app called OneDrive Photos, which automatically indexes local images and offers AI-powered search and optional facial grouping. The app is being rolled out via Windows Update or updates to the existing OneDrive client. OneDrive Photos can detect and display locally stored images even without a Microsoft account. Once signed in, users can utilize AI search to find photos using natural-language queries and optical character recognition. The app features an optional People function that groups similar faces, which are private to the user and can be deleted by disabling the feature. Users must opt in due to potential biometric data concerns. This development follows a previous privacy issue with Microsoft's AI-powered Recall feature, which was made opt-in by default. Additionally, Google has begun downloading its 4GB Gemini Nano AI model through Chrome updates, raising concerns about AI features being integrated via routine software updates. OneDrive Photos is linked to the existing OneDrive client and cannot be removed independently; users must uninstall OneDrive entirely to remove the app.
