India Demands GitHub to Remove Bitchat Code Repositories
The Cyber Crime Coordination Center of India has issued a command to GitHub under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, demanding the removal of three code repositories related to Bitchat within three hours. The notice states that the application supports anonymous communication without registration, phone numbers, or centralized logs, severely hindering law enforcement's legitimate interception, tracing, and investigation. Bitchat was released in July 2025 as open-source software by Jack Dorsey, allowing encrypted messages to be forwarded between phones via a Bluetooth mesh network without the need for the internet, servers, or accounts, and can also forward Bitcoin transactions offline. The removal order was triggered by student protests in Delhi, India, where protesters used tools like Bitchat to maintain communication after the government implemented internet shutdowns. As of the time of publication, it remains unclear whether GitHub has completed the removal, as the application is still available for download on Google Play and the App Store.
