Optimism Discovers and Fixes Critical Security Vulnerability in Advance
Optimism (OP) has discovered and fixed a 'critical' level security vulnerability in advance. The issue was that forged refund data could be accepted without recalculation during the verification process of the refund path. This could lead to significant damage if exploited in a production environment. According to the Optimism Governance Forum on the 13th, this flaw was identified in the SDM verification path. There was a possibility that the system could accept untrusted refund payloads, which is assessed as a structural risk that could directly impact the reliability of Layer 2 core infrastructure. However, Optimism explained that this issue was fixed before the 'Lagoon' upgrade was fully applied to the operational environment. There were no actual financial losses. This case is more akin to a security notice that detected and blocked a critical flaw early rather than a hacking incident. The industry evaluates that such disclosures are actually important. Security issues in the cryptocurrency market typically emerge only after incidents occur, but when pre-patches and transparent announcements are made as in this case, it helps prevent damage while also aiding in the inspection of similar vulnerabilities. Especially for Layer 2 networks like Optimism (OP), which other apps and protocols depend on, even small verification errors can lead to cascading risks. This action demonstrates that 'how you respond' is more important than 'whether there was a problem.'
