Bumble Cancels Women-First Messaging Rule

Bumble has announced an adjustment to its long-standing core mechanism. From now on, both parties can send the first message after a successful match, eliminating the requirement for women to initiate the conversation. Meanwhile, the platform has extended the response time limit from 24 hours to 72 hours, aiming to reduce the pressure on users to reply quickly.

Company Adjusts Product Positioning
This change signifies that Bumble is downplaying its most recognizable product setting. Since its launch in 2014, Bumble has differentiated itself with the "women-first messaging" feature, particularly in heterosexual matching scenarios, hoping to reduce harassment and give more control over initiating conversations to female users.

Bumble's founder and CEO, Whitney Wolfe Herd, stated that this update is an evolution of the product, not a departure from its original positioning. She emphasized that "women-first" does not mean there is only one way to establish connections, but rather that a better user experience should be designed around women's needs.

Survey Shows Users Value Flexibility More
The company cited its own survey indicating that 66% of female respondents prefer men to send the first message, partly because it alleviates pressure during the dating process. Additionally, over half of the surveyed members stated that longer response times improved their user experience.

This adjustment did not happen suddenly. In 2024, Bumble began relaxing its original rules by launching the "Opening Moves" feature, allowing women to preset questions in their profiles that men can answer to initiate interaction.

Revamp Amid Revenue Decline
This revamp also occurs at a time when the company's operations are under pressure. Bumble's second-quarter financial report released last week showed a 15.2% year-on-year decline in revenue to $210.5 million. The company also anticipates that the number of paying users will continue to decline in the third quarter.

The online dating industry has seen overall growth slow down in recent quarters, with user fatigue, increased competition, and a decline in the appeal of traditional swipe-based matching experiences being common challenges faced by platforms. For Bumble, canceling its signature rule and extending the response window is both a product experience adjustment and a reflection of the company's search for new entry points to restore growth.
