Brazil accused the United States of attempting to interfere in the presidential elections in October, following the revocation of the visa of Brazilian ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that this decision is part of a "deliberate escalation of hostile measures" for ideological reasons. In a statement, the Brazilian Executive expressed that there is an "unjustified interest in interfering in the upcoming elections." Washington justified the revocation as a reciprocal measure in response to Brazil's delay in granting approval to Daniel Perez, Trump's candidate for the embassy in Brasília. The revocation does not imply the expulsion of Viotti, and the State Department indicated that her visa could be restored if Brazil approves Perez and modifies restrictions on US diplomats. Brazil confirmed that the request to accept Perez is still under review and emphasized that the Vienna Convention does not set a deadline for response. Additionally, it questioned why Washington made the appointment public before receiving Brazil's consent. Regarding the rejected visas, Brazil maintained that US officials intended to travel to "cast doubt on the integrity of the Brazilian electoral system." This diplomatic conflict occurs amid the electoral campaign, where Lula seeks a new mandate and faces Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Lula also demanded that Trump refrain from intervening in the electoral dispute and reminded that US sanctions against Brazilian authorities remain in place.
