American Electric Power has announced an expansion of its capital plan to $78 billion for the years 2026 to 2030, aiming to increase new load to 63 GW by 2030. The company emphasized the need for expansion in generation, transmission, and distribution facilities due to the rising power demand from AI data centers. AI data centers must include servers, networks, storage, and power facilities, with NVIDIA reporting that data center revenue accounts for 92% of its total revenue. Cooling companies are expanding their products to meet high-density computing environments, and Vertiv has announced a modular liquid cooling infrastructure with a capacity of 10 MW. Eaton plans to invest over $30 million to build a medium-voltage switchgear factory in Nebraska. However, equipment supply is struggling to keep pace with the increase in demand, and delivery times for some transformers have extended to several years. Concerns about electricity cost burdens have also been raised, and the White House is promoting voluntary commitments from utilities and data center developers to ensure that the increase in AI power demand does not fall on households and businesses.
