About 50,000 immigrants entered Ceuta from Morocco in the last week, although half of them have reportedly returned. At least 57 people died trying to reach Spain by land and sea. Thousands crossed the border in 48 hours, either swimming, on foot, or climbing fences. Most of the migrants have returned to Morocco, but the volume of irregular entries in just a few days exceeds the 20,037 recorded between 2017 and mid-2026. By July 15 of this year, arrivals had already doubled compared to previous seasons. Ceuta accounts for 19% of all irregular entries to Spain, the highest level since records began. In the city of 84,000 inhabitants, authorities continue to update the toll as returns progress. In the last 48 hours, at least 57 people drowned, most of them while trying to swim across the border. Since 2014, at least 35,153 migrants have died attempting to reach Europe, with the Central Mediterranean route being the most trafficked and deadly.
